Espana: el primer dia

Well, technically our first day was spent traveling. It took us a long time to get to Madrid! We had a flight from Houston to Newark, Newark to Brussels, and then Brussels to Madrid. When we were in Brussels we had about an hour from when our flight landed until our next flight took off. We also had to go through customs and security all over again before we could board our flight. It was a mad house!! I have never seen an airport security be so disorganized. There were literally hundreds of people standing in a crowd trying to go through security. Craziness! We would have been late for our last flight, but they were nice and were holding the plane for us! So we left my house in Texas to go to the airport on Wednesday Oct 6th at 9:30 a.m. We arrived in Espana on October 7th at noon (so 5 a.m. Houston time) It was a long day! And, we were exhausted but we didn't waste any time seeing the sites! My pictures are all backwards but you get the idea :)

eating dinner at La Botilleria. We had croquettas, spaghetti bolognese, and tortilla de patata. The restaurant was overlooking the Plaza de Oriente and right next to the Opera house. All the restaurants have tables and umbrellas to eat outside and there are street musicians playing while you eat.

where we ate lunch. meson cinco jotas. i had arroz marinero...it tasted like gumbo but without the soup and estrogono...it was like stewed beef with saffron rice. lunch was an interesting experience, the tip is included in your total and you don't tip the waiter!

just walking down the street. the buildings in madrid are gorgeous.

some building in el retiro. It was called something Cristal. Sorry I don't remember the first part of the name. The building was beautiful!! Inside was a randome "sculpture" with white plastic laundry bins, white trash cans, white baby baths, etc. piled in a row from floor to ceiling. Odd/interesting.

walking through parque del retiro.
